THE EFFECT OF ANXIETY ON EMOTIONAL EATING AND SLEEP QUALITY IN PREGNANCY DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine emotional eating and sleep quality in pregnancy during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, and its relationship to COVID-19 anxiety levels. METHODS: In this cross-sectional predictive study, information on sociodemographics, the presence of close relatives diagnosed with COVID-19, anxiety levels, and dietary habits was obtained using a questionnaire. Turkish version of Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to evaluate emotional eating and sleep quality, respectively. RESULTS: In total, 391 pregnant women completed the study, 25.1% of whom had a first-degree relative who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and 56.5% had high anxiety levels (anxiety level >8/10) regarding COVID-19. The mean emotional eating behavior score was 20.4 ±12.2. The mean PSQI score was 6.04 ±3.29, and 61.4% of the women had poor sleep quality. With an increase in anxiety about COVID-19, there was a concurrent increase in body mass index (BMI) in the last trimester and emotional eating scores, while sleep quality scores decreased (p < 0.05). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This study revealed that pregnant women are at risk of emotional eating and poor sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychosocial support and nutritional consultation are important components of prenatal follow-up during a pandemic. ORCID NO: 0000-0001-8925-2586
