EVIDENCE-BASED CARE PRACTICES IN GYNAECOLOGICAL SURGERY PATIENTS

Purpose: Evidence-based practices before and after surgery help reduce the response to stress by preserving organs, speed up the recovery process, and provide early discharge. Therefore, the aim of our study is to provide nurses with information on evidence-based practices in gynaecological surgery, contribute to nursing literature, and encourage the use of current evidence in patient care. Material and Methods: The review discusses evidence-based practices in preoperative care, including patient counselling and education, preoperative optimization, thromboembolism prophylaxis, bowel preparation, nutrition, premedication, antimicrobial prophylaxis, and skin preparation. It also covers evidence-based practices in postoperative care, such as monitoring of postoperative vital signs, thromboembolism prophylaxis, spirometer use, fluid therapy, nutrition, prevention of ileus, glucose control, analgesia, urinary drainage, early mobilization, and antibiotic prophylaxis. Conclusion: The literature review shows that there are more studies on patients undergoing colorectal surgery than on those undergoing gynaecological surgery, and evidence-based practices are not widely used in nursing practices in Turkey. Nurses should provide quality care that reduces costs, length of hospital stay, complication and morbidity rates, and increases safety, effectiveness, and patient satisfaction instead of relying on traditional practices in preoperative and postoperative patient care. The process of making best practices a routine part of surgical care is challenging and requires collaborative efforts among health care professionals. ORCID NO: 0000-0001-8627-4237
