DO WOMEN WITH POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME HAVE SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION?

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrinologic disorder accompanied by irregular menstrual cycles, hirsutism, acne, and obesity. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether women with PCOS have sexual dysfunction or not. Methods: In this case-control study, sexually active women who were diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria (n=46) were compared with healthy women (n=44). Age, number of gravidity and parity, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, presence of chronic disease, medications, and Ferriman-Gallway scores (FGS) were noted. Sexual function was assessed by the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) that has six subscales of desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. Higher FSFI scores indicate better sexual functioning. Results: The median age of the PCOS group was lower whereas, the mean BMI and FGS were higher than the control group. While the FSFI subscales of desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction were similar between groups, the PCOS group had a lower pain subscale score and total FSFI score indicating sexual dysfunction. No correlations were observed between the total FSFI and subscale scores and BMI and FGS. With the cut-off point of 26.5 for the FSFI total score, the PCOS group have significantly more women who had sexual dysfunction when compared to the control group [24 (52.2%) vs. 12 (27.3%), p=0.01, respectively]. Conclusion: According to our results, women with PCOS tend to have more sexual dysfunction than healthy women. Whether this difference is solely from pain needs to be evaluated in further studies.
